OCAW Local 1-591 has set up a memorial fund to
assist the families of the six workers who died in a Nov.
25 explosion at the Equilon Puget Sound Refining Co. in
Anacortes, Washington. Those who died in the explosion
and fire in the refinery's coker were:
* Ron J. Granfors, 49, of Burlington, foreman in the
Crude Processing Department.
* Wayne E. Dowe, 44, of Mt. Vernon, a head operator in
the refinery's crude processing department and an OCAW
member.
* Dave Murdzia, 30, of Mt. Vernon, a foreman with
Western Plant Services Inc.
* Warren (Woody) Fry, 50, of Anacortes, an
OCAW-represented employee with Western Plant Services
Inc.
* Ted Cade, 23, of Bow, an OCAW-represented employee
with Western Plant Services Inc.
* Jim Berlin, 38, of Anacortes, an OCAW-represented
employee with Western Plant Services Inc.
International Representative Tom Lind said all six
of the workers were experienced and highly trained. The
six men were working on the coker, which was down because
of a power outage. A windstorm had swept through the
area, causing a total electrical failure. The coker
unit where the fire occurred is one of several processing
units that use heat and pressure to squeeze usable
petroleum out of the crude oil remaining after gasoline
and lighter products have been removed. The residual
leftover material is petroleum coke and looks like coal.
OCAW, Equilon and various state and federal government
agencies are investigating the cause of the disaster.
Contributions can be designated for either the
Scholarship Fund or the Victim's Fund. Checks should be
made payable to OCAW Local 1-591 and sent to the
