Deep in the Heart of Texas

ON MAY 14-16TH, 30 LOCKED-OUT Crown workers and locked-out Steelworkers from Kaiser Aluminum, spent three days leafleting together.

They gave out "Crownasaurus" pollution refrigerator magnets with the phone number for the county pollution control agency, so residents could report the pollution from Crown's refinery.

On May 8, 1999, 30 members of PACE, along with members of Steelworkers, Machinists and IBEW, participated in the Pasadena Strawberry Festival Parade. The workers had a 40 foot trailer pulled for three miles.

Authorities allowed Caucasian union members to leaflet during the festivities but not Hispanic workers. Some things never change.

Despite this indignation, the parade was still a success as over 500 leaflets were handed out, and there was a great show of support from the community.

Later in the day, the float was driven to the Pasadena refinery. The workers chanted slogans, sang songs and let the company know this fight is far from over.
