CBTU and APRI Featured in Birmingham Efforts

THE BIRMINGHAM CHAPTERS of the A. Phillip Randolph Institute (APRI) and the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists (CBTU) are deeply involved in efforts to promote the Crown Boycott in Birmingham. The city, long known for its deep civil rights and labor traditions, has been a special focus of the Crown Boycott.

Linda Miller, President of APRI in Birmingham, and Frank Paige, President of the CBTU Birmingham chapter, recently recorded a 60-second radio spot, which is scheduled to run 80 times over a one-month period. Together with Derrick Combs and Sharron Payne, local RWDSU leaders, they have also been promoting the Adopt-A-Crown Station program among various unions and groups. Six Crown stations are regularly handbilled and picketed by a core of volunteers, and more stations are expected to be adopted soon.

Derrick Combs, who also serves as the Crown Boycott Coordinator in Birmingham, recently made a videotape about a day picketing a Crown gas station. One highlight occurs when a motorist runs out of gas, rather than pull into a Crown station after seeing the pickets. Derrick thanks him profusely and loans him his car, so he can go to a different station to obtain some gas. The video shows car after car turning away from the Crown station.

In addition to unions, the boycott in Birmingham has been endorsed by the Greater Birmingham Ministries, Alliance for Democracy, Sierra Club, and the Coalition for a New South. A number of meetings have been arranged with ministers who have announced their support of the boycott.
